Alec is new here. A short time in the world and already a whole set of faces, a yawn, a wide serious stare, a small mouth working out what it thinks.


We stayed by one window in Maryam's home and let the light do the work. No setup, no fuss. Just the three parts of a quiet morning.


First Alec on his own. The feet, the ear, the hands curling around a finger. All the small things you forget are that small.


Then feeding, Maryam looking down at him and him looking up at her.


Then skin to skin as he got heavy and sleepy, the two of them under a blanket on the chair, his head on her chest, both of them settled.



He fell asleep on her about the time the light went soft.
