We went in with a loose plan. A dress, a mood, the gardens, and the last of the light. That was it. Everything else we found once we were there.


Some of it was mine, some of it was April's. She'd try something, I'd try something, and the good frames came out of the back and forth. The dark trees. The dry seed heads she held against the dress. The long grass at the very end when the sun dropped behind it.


Neither of us knew exactly what we were making until we were making it.


I don't shoot this kind of thing often. It was good to be reminded how much happens when you stop planning and start playing.
